Glute Bridge
In the glute bridge you lie on your back and lift your hips using your glutes. It works the glutes and hamstrings and needs no equipment. It suits beginners as a starting point before the hip thrust and makes a great warm-up before leg day.
Main muscle: Glutes · Helping: Hamstrings · Equipment: Bodyweight
How to do it
- Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat, hip-width apart
- Bring your heels close enough to touch them with your fingertips
- Drive through your heels and lift your hips until your body is straight from shoulders to knees
- Squeeze your glutes for a second at the top, then lower slowly
Common mistakes
- Arching your lower back instead of lifting with your glutes
- Pushing through your toes with your heels lifted
- Knees falling inward as you lift
More tips
- Breathe out as you lift and hold for two seconds at the top
- Harder: do it on one leg, rest a dumbbell or plate on your hips, or add a band above your knees
- Press your knees slightly outward as you lift to feel your glutes more
Sets and reps
3 sets of as many clean reps as you can, resting 1–2 minutes. Add reps little by little once you can finish every set with clean form, and log your numbers to track your progress.
