Stationary Bike
On the stationary bike you pedal while seated and control the resistance. It is great cardio with no impact on the knees and joints, and it works the quads and glutes. It suits every level, especially beginners and heavier people.
Main muscle: Quads · Helping: Glutes, Hamstrings, Calves · Equipment: Machine
How to do it
- Set the seat at hip height: with the pedal at the bottom, your knee stays slightly bent
- Strap your feet in with the balls of your feet on the pedals
- Sit tall with your abs braced and a light grip on the handlebars
- Pedal in smooth circles and add resistance when it gets easy
Common mistakes
- A seat set too low so the knees bend a lot, or too high so the hips rock
- Very light resistance at a very high speed, so you bounce instead of pedaling
- Slumping over the handlebars with a rounded back
More tips
- Start with 10 minutes at moderate resistance and add 5 minutes each week
- For more burn: 30 seconds fast and 90 seconds easy, 8 times
- If you get numbness or knee pain, recheck the seat height
How long?
10–30 minutes at a moderate effort (you can still talk in short sentences), 2–4 times a week. Start with 3–5 easy minutes to warm up. Log your time each session (and the distance if the machine shows it), and add time or speed little by little to track your progress.
Questions
- What muscles does the Stationary Bike work?
- Mainly the quads, with help from the glutes, hamstrings and calves.
- What is the Stationary Bike good for?
- It's cardio: it raises your heart rate, builds heart and lung fitness and burns calories. Do it after your weights or on a day of its own; 5 easy minutes also make a good warm-up before lifting.
- What do I need for the Stationary Bike?
- A stationary bike. Set the seat at about hip height so your knee is almost straight when the pedal is at the bottom.
- Is it good for beginners?
- Yes. Start short (5–10 minutes) at a pace where you can still talk, and add 2–3 minutes each week.
- What can I do instead?
- Try the Elliptical Trainer or the Rowing Machine; they also raise your heart rate.
