Elliptical Trainer
On the elliptical your feet ride on pedals that move in an oval path while your hands push and pull moving handles. The motion is close to running without the impact, working the legs and glutes plus some upper body. It suits every level and is easier on the knees than running.
Main muscles: Quads, Glutes · Helping: Hamstrings, Calves, Chest, Upper back · Equipment: Machine
How to do it
- Step onto the pedals, hold the handles and start moving before you choose a program
- Stay upright with your whole foot on the pedals; keep your heels down
- Push and pull the handles so your upper body works too
- Set the resistance so you feel the effort, not just glide along
Common mistakes
- Zero resistance, so the pedals move you instead of you moving them
- Leaning forward and resting your weight on the handles
- Lifting your heels and moving on your toes
More tips
- Try pedaling backwards for a minute or two to work the hamstrings more
- Hold the fixed handles for a while to focus on your legs
- 20 minutes at a moderate pace is plenty after weight training
How long?
10–30 minutes at a moderate effort (you can still talk in short sentences), 2–4 times a week. Start with 3–5 easy minutes to warm up. Log your time each session (and the distance if the machine shows it), and add time or speed little by little to track your progress.
Questions
- What muscles does the Elliptical Trainer work?
- Mainly the quads and glutes, with help from the hamstrings, calves, chest and upper back.
- What is the Elliptical Trainer good for?
