Incline Treadmill Walk ·

Incline Treadmill Walk
You walk on the treadmill at a steep incline (about 10 to 15%) at a moderate pace. It raises your heart rate and burns calories close to running but is much easier on the knees, and it works the glutes and calves more than flat walking. It suits every level, especially beginners and heavier people.
Main muscles: Glutes, Calves · Helping: Hamstrings, Quads · Equipment: Machine
How to do it
- Walk flat for two minutes, then raise the incline step by step
- Pick a speed you can keep without holding the handrails
- Stay tall; any forward lean is small and comes from the ankles, not your back
- Push through your heel and midfoot and feel your glutes working
Common mistakes
- Hanging onto or leaning on the handrails, which takes away most of the work
- An incline and speed so high that you bend forward
- Stopping suddenly without lowering the incline and speed first
More tips
- Try the popular 12-3-30: incline 12, about 3 mph (5 km/h), 30 minutes, and scale it down if it's too hard
- If your lower back or calves hurt, lower the incline
- Easy check: you can talk, but it takes a little effort
How long?
10–30 minutes at a moderate effort (you can still talk in short sentences), 2–4 times a week. Start with 3–5 easy minutes to warm up. Log your time each session (and the distance if the machine shows it), and add time or speed little by little to track your progress.
